The Pens looked ready to take on the Buffalo Sabers for the second time in one year in their powder blue jerseys. However unlike during the Winter Classic the Sabers scored first. Jason Pominville scored his seventh of the season with help from Andrej Sekera and Adam Mair at 8:14.
The Pens came back to tie the game at one mid-way throw the second period when Evgeni Malkin notched his first of four points of the night. His seventh goal was scored at 11:07 on the power play with help from Alex Goligoski and Ruslan Fedotenko.
But the Sabers took the lead again when Thomas Vanek scored his thirteenth of the season on the power play at 19:14.
The third period however was dominated by the Pens. Alex Goligoski scored a Ryan Whitney like goal on the power play. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin played catch in the offensive zone before throwing it to Goligoski for his fourth of the year on the power play at 11:43.
But a tie wasn`t enough for the Pens, Jordan Staal scored his sixth of the year with help from Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy at 15:27. Staal was where he needed to be in front of the net where Cooke through the puck for a beautiful goal.
Ruslan Fedotenko also chipped in with a goal from the hash after a break-away and pass from Evgeni Malkin. Petr Sykora also assisted on the goal at 16:29.
And with time running down the Sabers pulled Ryan Miller for the extra attacker. Evgeni Malkin was feeling generous as he tipped the puck to Jordan Staal for this seventh of the season into an empty net. Petr Sykora again assisted at 19:36.
The Pens sixth straight win came at the hands of Marc-Andre Fleury who stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced. Malkin notched four points of the night to bring his total to 30 points through 17 games.
The three stars were 3. Alex Goligoski, 2. Jordan Staal, 1. Evgeni Malkin.
Ryan Whitney (foot) and Sergei Gonchar (shoulder) missed the game along with healthy scratch Darryl Sydor.
Next the Pens take on the Wild Tuesday night at Mellon Arena. The game has an early start time of 7:08.
